It's well documented that russell has always looked up to greenwood... They have similar characteristics, in their mannerisms and even their playing.
However, russell does a good job of not being a carbon copy of greenwood. (At least with the old bloc party, when they made fresh and brave guitar music) You can hear the influence, but they both have distinct styles. Russell relies more on bright, cutting melodies while greenwood is just all over the place with rough distortion and irregular/dissonant notes etc.
Tim is right, Jonny is a influence to Russell but he still is unique. They have totally different playing styles. I believe though that Jonny has more actual knowledge in music and experience from more years of experience and various instruments. x
Greenwood is an influence on every enlightened guitarist... I do not feel that the Bloc Party guitarist sounds much like Greenwood at all!! And besides, the kid has his own thing going. There is no need to say he is under the wing of Jonny.
i can understand that many of you just say jonny greenwood is far better than this little poor kid but thats a big mistake! i know greenwood is pure fucking genius but coincidently Radiohead AND Bloc Party are my two favourite Bands and i can tell yo DONT UNDERESTIMATE the great russel of course he is younger and less experiencend and also he did not yet do so many masterpieces like jonny but still hes a pure genius!
Russell is unique and right now there are no other guitarists out there who could match his talent, I think Russell is the best, and I love his blochead!! (Hair for non-Bloc Party fans)

I don't see the similarities between these two to be honest. Now, Johnny Greenwood vs. Joshua Third, that makes more sense I'd say.
